Modern systems — one concept

Excess potential

TL;DR

Attaching too much weight to something is held to distort the field around it, calling up forces that restore balance — often by destroying the thing wanted.

Attaching too much weight to something is held to distort the field around it, calling up forces that restore balance — often by destroying the thing wanted.

In Russian. избыточный потенциал — the original term; English and Polish editions do not always render it the same way.

Where the idea comes from

The practical core is ordinary and well supported: caring too much about one outcome degrades your handling of it. Performance under high stakes, choking, and the cost of over-monitoring are among the better-documented findings in psychology.

What you can actually check

Directly, on yourself, within a week. Take the thing you are most anxious about and write what you would do if it mattered less. Do that version. The answer is usually simpler, earlier, and less hedged.

What it does not settle

The mechanism is asserted and never specified. The practical counsel survives without it: caring less about a single outcome is old and defensible advice, with or without a field.

Fair questions

What is excess potential?

Attaching so much weight to something that, in the system's picture, the field around it distorts and balancing forces arrive, often destroying the thing wanted. The mechanism is asserted and never specified.

Does excess potential really destroy what you want?

The ordinary version happens and you can watch it: high stakes make people rigid, over-prepared and worse at the moment itself. The field version is a separate claim and nothing in the books establishes it.
