Modern systems — one concept

Freiling

TL;DR

A rule for dealing with other people: stop trying to obtain something from them, shift attention to what they want, and let your own aim arrive as a consequence.

A rule for dealing with other people: stop trying to obtain something from them, shift attention to what they want, and let your own aim arrive as a consequence.

In Russian. фрейлинг — the original term; English and Polish editions do not always render it the same way.

Where the idea comes from

Stripped of the vocabulary this is ordinary and effective advice: establish what the other party is trying to get, open with that, then ask for your own. Negotiation literature has said a version of it for decades. The word itself has no established origin. It is introduced in volume three, and the author gives no etymology there. The popular derivation from German Fräulein is an artefact of search: Russian does have a word from Fräulein — freilina, a lady-in-waiting — and the two get conflated. That is a coincidence of spelling, not a derivation.

What you can actually check

Easily, and fast. Measure it by reply rates and by the tone of the replies. This is the most immediately useful rule in the whole system and it needs no metaphysics at all.

What it does not settle

This one needs no metaphysics at all. It is a plain and effective social principle, and it works whether or not the space of variants exists — which is worth noticing about a system that presents it as a consequence of the field.

Fair questions

What is freiling?

The rule that you get what you want by first serving what the other person wants — refusing to press your own importance, and opening from their interest.

Is freiling manipulation?

It becomes manipulation when the interest you name is invented. Used honestly it is simply the discipline of finding out what someone actually needs before asking them for something.
