Modern systems: one question

Is Reality Transurfing Hermetic?

TL;DR

No: it is New Thought, not ancient Hermetic. But both are philosophies of agency, about how a person shapes their own course through attention, intention and mind. Transurfing aims that agency at circumstances; the Hermetic texts aim it at the person. Here is how they differ, and what actually moves outcomes.

No, and it does not claim to be. But the question behind it is a fair one, because Transurfing and Hermeticism are both philosophies of agency: how a person shapes their own course through attention, intention and mind. Transurfing is the recent answer, built for people who want to manifest. The Hermetic texts are the older one. If Transurfing speaks to you, they are worth meeting on their own terms.

The short answer

Transurfing began circulating in Russia in 2003; the books followed from 2004. It names no Hermetic source, quotes no Hermetic text and claims no line of transmission from one. Its datable ancestors are closer to hand: the American New Thought literature of 1906 to 1908, which it partly inverts; the French occult egregore behind its pendulums; Castaneda in Russian translation; and popular accounts of many-worlds physics behind its space of variants. So the relation is a shared question, not a lineage.

The question they share

The core of the Hermetic tradition is a body of Greek texts written in Roman Egypt around 100 to 300 CE: the Corpus Hermeticum, seventeen short treatises, and the Asclepius, which survives complete only in Latin. Read for agency, they are bolder than their reputation.

  • The human as a great miracle. The Asclepius calls the human being a great miracle because it is double, mortal in body and divine in mind. Pico della Mirandola opened his Oration with that line and drew from it a being with no fixed nature, free to sink toward the beast or rise toward the angel.
  • Mind as a choice. In treatise IV, God sends down a mixing-bowl of nous; those who choose to be immersed in it gain mind, the rest remain merely alive. Capacity is elective, which is the root of our fifth move, Agency.
  • The most audacious instruction. In treatise XI, Mind tells Hermes to make himself equal to God in order to understand God.

Where the answers differ

Transurfing aims agency at circumstances: hold the right intention in the right way, and events move. The Hermetica aim it at the person. In Poimandres Mind shows the narrator how the world was made and how the soul climbs home; nothing in the vision is a technique for next week. The endpoint the texts name is gnosis, knowledge that changes the knower, and in treatise XIII rebirth drives out twelve torments, greed and recklessness among them. The texts also disagree with each other; treatise by treatise shows where.

They do touch at one point. The Emerald Tablet, a text in Hermes’ name first attested in Arabic in the eighth or ninth century, frames correspondence as a working instruction for producing an effect and names no mechanism. Transurfing supplies the mechanism the older text declines to give. That is not continuity; it is a modern answer to an old refusal.

Manifestation, the technical version

If what you want from either is results, here is what this site can stand behind. What moves outcomes is an ordinary chain: attention shapes what you do, what you do shapes results, and the weight you put on an outcome changes how you handle it (Baumeister 1984). Picturing the outcome alone predicts less effort, not more (Oettingen & Mayer 2002). So name the effect, name the causal path, take the next action, and lower the stakes on any single result. That is the useful core of Transurfing’s importance and of our sixth move, Effect. Anything stronger, thought moving events you have no contact with, is not established by either.

Taking the question further

Read Transurfing as a modern book on its own merits, and its closest relative as what it is: Transurfing and the Kybalion. Then meet the older version of the question: begin at Start here, or go straight to Poimandres.

Fair questions

Is Reality Transurfing Hermetic?

No. It began circulating in Russia in 2003, names no Hermetic source and claims no line of transmission from the Hermetica. What it shares with them is a question, how far a person can shape their own course, not a lineage.

Can you manifest with Transurfing?

The part that works is technical, not mystical: name the effect, name the causal path, act, and lower the weight you place on any single result. Picturing the outcome alone predicts less effort, not more (Oettingen & Mayer 2002). Nothing establishes that intention moves events you have no contact with.

Did Zeland draw on the Corpus Hermeticum?

Nothing shows that he did. The books cite no Hermetic treatise and quote none. Resemblances sit at the level of general ideas, mind and correspondence, which reached the twentieth century through New Thought and the Kybalion.

What do the Hermetic texts say about agency?

That a human being is a great miracle, mortal in body and divine in mind (Asclepius); that mind is offered and must be chosen (treatise IV); and that the change they aim at is in the person, aimed at knowing God, not at an outcome.
