Hermetic meditation

TL;DR

There is no meditation manual in the Hermetic texts. What Corpus Hermeticum XIII (Greek, roughly 2nd to 3rd century CE) does give is a practice: silence, a prayer said in the open air (facing south at sunset, east at sunrise), and a hymn. The numbered six-step “Hermetic meditation” that circulates online is modern packaging, and the “mental transmutation” that often comes with it is from the Kybalion (Chicago, 1908).

Search for Hermetic meditation and you will find a tidy protocol: go outside at dawn, face east, sit in stillness for five minutes, give thanks, recite a hymn, reach unity. About half of it is in the sources. The other half was added much later.

In the sources

The core text is treatise XIII of the Corpus Hermeticum, the dialogue on rebirth between Hermes and his son Tat. Three things in it can fairly be called a practice. First, silence: Hermes says this knowledge cannot be passed on by argument and asks Tat to keep quiet (CH XIII.2, 22). Second, place and direction: the prayer is said under the open sky, facing south at sunset and east at sunrise (CH XIII.16). Third, a hymn that opens by calling the whole cosmos to listen (CH XIII.17-20).

The same treatise names twelve inner “torments” (ignorance, grief, envy, anger and the rest) and ten divine powers that drive them out (CH XIII.7-9). The twelve are zodiacal (CH XIII.12): rebirth is described as breaking the grip of the stars sign by sign. The torments are not fought one by one. They are displaced by what takes their place.

Close to the end of the Asclepius (Latin, §41), a prayer of thanksgiving treats gratitude as the proper offering, in place of incense.

What was added

None of the classical Hermetic texts numbers steps, sets a duration, or promises unity as the result of a sequence. The “laws” of vibration, polarity and rhythm, and the idea of “mental transmutation”, come from the Kybalion, published in Chicago in 1908. Popular videos on the topic also say the Hermetists anticipated modern neuroscience; no Hermetic text supports that.

A week-long version, and its limit

Our reading, not the text: once a day, step outside without your phone, face where the light is, and stand still long enough to notice what your body wants to do instead. Don’t follow it. Then name one thing you are grateful for that you did not earn. It shows how fast attention leaves. It does not promise cosmic unity by Friday. The full exercise and its sources: Thanks instead of incense.

Fair questions

Is there an ancient Hermetic meditation technique?

Not as a numbered technique. Corpus Hermeticum XIII gives silence, a prayer in the open air, and a hymn. Step-by-step protocols are modern.

Where does 'mental transmutation' come from?

From the Kybalion, published in Chicago in 1908 by 'Three Initiates', usually attributed to William Walker Atkinson. It is not in the Corpus Hermeticum.

What are the twelve torments in Hermeticism?

In CH XIII: ignorance, grief, incontinence, lust, injustice, greed, deceit, envy, treachery, anger, recklessness and malice. Ten divine powers drive them out.

Which direction should you face in Hermetic prayer?

CH XIII.16: south at sunset, east at sunrise, under the open sky.
